Philippine Airlines Struggles with Aircraft Issues

Despite evading criticism from senators during a public hearing last week, Philippine Airlines (PAL) still faces its own unique challenges. Recent photos on social media have shown a series of flight cancellations, attributed to the same maintenance problem affecting rival airline Cebu Pacific. PAL spokesperson Cielo Villaluna explained that the flight cancellations were a result of several aircraft being grounded for maintenance. Affected passengers were either re-accommodated on the next available flights, rerouted, refunded, or offered travel vouchers. PAL has implemented various measures to minimize disruptions and restore normalcy in its flight schedules, such as seeking additional sources of critical parts suppliers, considering the acquisition of an older version of the A321ceo for its fleet, leasing additional Q400 turboprops and A330 jets, bringing back one stored A320 by August, and purchasing nine new A350 long-haul aircraft from Airbus. These measures aim to address recurring complaints, especially regarding non-functional business class seats, inflight entertainment systems, torn upholstery, and out-of-service bathrooms on long-haul flights.

Meanwhile, entrepreneur Anthony Ng, who postponed the P4.5-billion listing of his company North Star Meat Merchants last year, has found success in other ventures. Ng recently opened two new dining establishments, William Watson “Steak Room” and Fukui Omakase Restaurant, within a modern building along Katipunan Avenue. The restaurants offer elevated and sophisticated dining experiences at affordable prices. Ng also cites convenience as a factor in opening these establishments, as many of his executives live in the area. The restaurants are currently in the soft opening phase, but Ng expects business to pick up with the industry’s current resurgence.
