PlayStation 5 “Slim” Not Being Slim at All Shouldn’t Be a Surprise, as Die Shrinks Are Dead

The PlayStation 5 “Slim” model is not going to live up to its name, as leaked images and footage have confirmed that the new hardware revision will not be significantly smaller than the current models. An AMD leaker named Kepler has shed some light on why this is the case.

In a tweet, Kepler stated that the absence of slim consoles in this generation should come as no surprise, as there are no opportunities for die shrinks. Both Sony and Microsoft are unable to reduce costs and power envelope through die shrinking. Attempting to shrink the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S would cost over $100 million without offering any tangible benefits.

As previously mentioned, leaked images and video have given us our first look at the PlayStation 5 “Slim” hardware revision. These leaks confirm that the new design, which will replace the current models, does not differ significantly from the current design, and only has a few aesthetic changes. As Sony has yet to officially reveal this new model, there are still many unknowns. It is possible that there may be other changes under the hood that cannot be shown in the leaked videos. Since the console is expected to release before the end of the year, we can expect more information to be revealed soon. Stay tuned for the latest updates.
