PlayStation Officially Announces State of Play Event: Featuring Exciting Lineup Including Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League, PS VR2 Games, and More

Sony is gearing up for an exciting State of Play event, scheduled to take place this week. PlayStation has taken to Twitter to announce that the event will center around five new titles for the highly anticipated PS VR2, including both indie and third-party entries. However, the highlight and main attraction of the event will undoubtedly be an extended showcase of the upcoming game, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is set to last over 15 minutes. It’s worth noting that developer Rocksteady Studios has been relatively tight-lipped about the game, withholding gameplay footage and specific details about its co-op mechanics.

Gamers and enthusiasts can catch the live State of Play event on February 24 at 2:30 am IST in India, and on February 23 at 1 pm PT in the US, streaming across PlayStation’s official YouTube and Twitch channels.

Sony’s preference for digital-only State of Play events became apparent when they decided to step away from E3 in 2019. This medium has proven to be an effective platform for showcasing upcoming games. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, originally slated for release in 2022, faced several delays before settling on a launch date of May 26, announced during The Game Awards 2022. The game allows players to assume the role of one of four lead characters from Task Force X, namely Captain Boomerang, Deadshot, Harley Quinn, and King Shark. Together, they embark on a mission to save the world by taking down the Justice League, who have fallen under the control of Brainiac.

The game is set in an open-world Metropolis, providing players with the option to play solo or team up with three others in online co-op mode. The gameplay emphasizes strategic cooperation, encouraging players to utilize unique abilities and traversal mechanics. For example, Harley Quinn relies on her trusty grappling hook, while Captain Boomerang can teleport across the map using his infamous boomerangs.

Leaked screenshots from last month hinted at the inclusion of a battle pass system and menu elements typically found in live-service titles. However, it’s important to note that these unlocks will be purely cosmetic, and character abilities can be upgraded through earned experience points during gameplay. Rest assured, players will not start off weakened; instead, they will have the opportunity to become incredibly powerful, much like Batman in Arkham Knight.

The design choices revealed in these screenshots caused some fans to voice their concerns, as they were expecting a standalone, linear story experience with co-op mechanics serving as an optional extra. This, in turn, sparked speculation about creative conflicts within Rocksteady Studios, leading to the departure of co-founders and former studio heads Sefton Hill and Jamie Walker from the company in October.

In addition to the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League showcase, the State of Play event will also offer a sneak peek at five new titles coming to PS VR2 later this year. The highly anticipated next-generation virtual reality headset was just released, alongside major VR titles such as Guerilla Games’ Horizon Call of the Mountain and Sony’s Gran Turismo 7 racing simulation game. However, there is currently no information regarding an India launch for the PS VR2.

PlayStation has been generous to its subscribers lately, with a three-hour free trial of God of War Ragnarök available to PS Plus Deluxe/Premium subscribers. For the monthly cost of Rs. 849, subscribers gain access to not only the acclaimed Horizon Forbidden West but also a variety of third-party titles like Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Borderlands 3.

Fans can mark their calendars for the release of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League on May 26, playable on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. The State of Play event is scheduled for February 24 at 2:30 am IST / February 23 at 1 pm PT.
