Project 007 Is Very Cool and Will Tell the Story of the First Bond, Says IOI; Project Fantasy Is ‘Years Away’

Gamereactor recently conducted an interview with two key members from IO Interactive Barcelona at Spain’s Gamelab 2023 event, where they shared some exciting details about the studio’s highly anticipated games: Project 007 and Project Fantasy.

Regarding Project 007, Senior Technical Executive Producer Cris Vega mentioned, “007 is currently in development and it’s shaping up to be really impressive. It will explore the story of the first Bond and how he evolves into the iconic secret agent we know, but that’s all we can reveal at this time.”

Project 007 was originally announced in November 2020 with limited information. Since then, we have learned that it won’t be a direct adaptation of any of the James Bond movies produced by MGM. Job listings have also hinted that it will be a third-person action game with expansive sandbox levels and advanced AI, which is not surprising considering IO Interactive’s expertise in creating the HITMAN series.

Gamereactor also managed to gather some insights about IO Interactive’s other major upcoming game, Project Fantasy, formerly known as Project Dragon when rumors circulated about its potential exclusivity to Xbox. However, Lead Core Engine Programmer Alvaro Fernandez was unable to provide any specific details:

“This is not within our domain. We are not aware of any official information regarding this, so we are unable to comment on it.”

Senior Technical Executive Producer Cris Vega shared that Project Fantasy may still have a long way to go before its release:

“Yes, it is going to be an online multiplayer RPG and it will likely be similar to other IOI games. It will probably be available on console and PC, but nothing has been confirmed. It will still be a few years until it is ready for release.”

IO Interactive has been experiencing significant growth to support its ambitious roadmap, especially after putting the HITMAN series on hold. In 2023 alone, they have opened two new offices in Istanbul and Brighton, UK. The total headcount at IOI has now exceeded 300 employees, with plans to continue expanding to around 400 employees. However, none of the individual offices, including Copenhagen and Malmö, are expected to surpass 100-150 developers.

Furthermore, it is worth mentioning that IO Interactive was included in Microsoft’s internal documents as a potential acquisition target in the future.
