Protesters held a demonstration inside the Cannon Rotunda of the US Capitol building on Tuesday, just one day before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is scheduled to address Congress. US Capitol Police are currently arresting the group involved.
“We are arresting a group that is illegally demonstrating inside the Cannon Rotunda. Demonstrations are not allowed inside the Congressional Buildings. We told the people, who legally entered, to stop or they would be arrested. They did not stop, so we are arresting them,” US Capitol Police said in a post on X.
Details regarding the number of arrests remain unknown at this time.
The protest, reportedly organized by Jewish activists, was aimed at condemning the ongoing Israeli actions in Gaza. A video from the scene showed a large banner reading “Jews Say Stop Arming Israel” prominently displayed in the Cannon Rotunda.
The demonstration took place just a day before Netanyahu’s address to Congress. Netanyahu arrived in Washington, D.C., on Monday and was originally set to meet with President Joe Biden on Tuesday. However, Biden’s meeting has been rescheduled to Thursday due to his quarantine in Delaware after testing positive for COVID-19. Biden returned to D.C. on Tuesday afternoon.
Vice President Kamala Harris will not preside over Netanyahu’s address to Congress due to a prior commitment, as reported by CNN. According to an aide, Harris will meet with Netanyahu separately later in the week.
Additionally, Senator JD Vance, the Republican vice presidential nominee, will be absent from the speech. Jason Miller, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, told The Hill that Vance’s duties as the Republican nominee are the reason for his absence.
Vance remains “steadfastly supportive of the people of Israel in their fight to defend their homeland and combat terrorist threats,” Miller told the outlet, adding, “However, he will not be in attendance for Prime Minister Netanyahu’s speech to Congress.”
