PS5 New “Slim” Model Seemingly Shown Off in Much Greater Detail via a Full Video

Rumors have been circulating for some time about Sony’s plans to release a new model of the PS5 in 2023. While it has been unofficially called the “PS5 Slim,” insiders have debated whether it will actually be significantly smaller. Instead, the main objective of the new console design is to eliminate the current 2-SKU approach (with and without a Blu-ray drive) for the PS5. The new PS5 will instead have a detachable drive that can be purchased separately, allowing Sony to sell only one base SKU. It is also likely that Sony will make some changes to decrease manufacturing costs, among other things.

Recently, a Twitter user claiming to be a PS5 software designer revealed details about the new console. A partial image of the new PS5 (with the product number CFI-2016) was also shared. Now, the Twitter user, known as “BwE_Dev,” has shared a 10-second video showcasing the hardware. You can watch it below.

While this information should be taken with caution for now, the revealed image matches the previous screenshot. It is unclear where this user obtained the machine, but there have been reports of them being distributed to developers. The bottom of the machine features a clear dividing line where the detachable Blu-ray drive can be attached. This explains the black “racing stripe” on the side of the machine, as one side of the lower section can be removed to attach the disc drive, while the other side has a black stripe for visual symmetry.

If this is indeed the new PS5 model, it can be seen as a decent visual upgrade, although limited. It is still a PS5, so those expecting a complete overhaul will be disappointed. However, it does appear slightly more streamlined, and the detachable disc drive is a good addition. Additionally, the console seems lighter based on the user’s ability to easily twist and turn it with one hand.

What are your thoughts? If this is indeed the new PS5 model, do you consider it an improvement over the original or a step back?
