‘Quake 2’ gets a surprise remaster for all platforms

Bethesda Softworks and id Software have unveiled an exciting remaster of the iconic game Quake 2 at QuakeCon 2023. This remaster is now available for all platforms and includes a brand new expansion pack.

Priced at £7.99 ($9.99) or accessible through Xbox Game Pass, Quake 2 features impressive upgrades such as 4K resolution, widescreen support, anti-aliasing, depth of field, dynamic and colored lighting, enhanced enemy animations and gore, improved AI behaviors, and cinematic visuals. For players on PlayStation or Nintendo Switch, the remaster enables the use of gyro controls for aiming, offering a seamless blend of immersion and accuracy when combined with the controller sticks.

Quake 2 allows for both online and local split-screen cooperative play for up to four players in its campaign and expansions. PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch support online sessions with up to 16 players or four-player local split-screen sessions. Meanwhile, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S versions allow for eight-player local split-screen multiplayer. As an added bonus, the remaster includes the popular expansion packs “The Reckoning” and “Ground Zero,” as well as the Nintendo 64 version of Quake 2 developed by Midway. Notably, the original soundtrack from Sonic Mayhem has been retained.

In 2021, id Software began recruiting for a potential remaster of Quake 2, following the successful release of the remaster of the original game. Additionally, the Game Rating and Administration Committee of South Korea rated Quake 2 in June of this year. This is reminiscent of their actions with the Quake remaster before its official reveal at QuakeCon 2021, which indicated the likelihood of a Quake 2 remaster.

In other gaming news, Telltale Games has recently acquired British developer Flavourworks to leverage its patented technology in order to create exceptional narrative-driven games.
