Quake II Remaster to Be Unveiled at QuakeCon, Says Leaker

There’s a new rumor circulating about a potential Quake II remaster announcement, following the rating from the South Korean board last month.

Renowned leaker billbil-kun managed to obtain some documents from the United States and European Union rating boards (ESRB and PEGI), which suggest that the rating for the Quake II remaster will be published on the ESRB website at this address on August 11th.

This indicates that the remaster might be revealed at QuakeCon 2023, which is scheduled to take place next week at the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas. The convention marks the return of in-person events after three years of virtual gatherings due to the COVID pandemic. It’s possible that the game will be unveiled on the first day of QuakeCon 2023, while the rating will go live the following day.

The leaked documents also confirm that the Quake II remaster will be available on the same platforms as the Quake I remaster: PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and Nintendo Switch. The Quake I remaster, developed by Nightdive Studios (known for System Shock), was released two years ago and even received an expansion pack from MachineGames. The studio behind Wolfenstein later added a new map and a Horde mode. Fans are hopeful that this new remaster will receive similar treatment. Additionally, although not confirmed by billbil-kun, it’s likely that the game will be included in the Game Pass library, following Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda.

This Quake II remaster could inject new life into the franchise, potentially leading to speculations among id Software fans about the creation of a new installment in the beloved arena shooter series. The Texan developer last released DOOM Eternal three years ago, suggesting that an announcement might be on the horizon.

It’s worth noting that PC gamers already have the option to play Quake II RTX, a visually stunning version of the game with full ray tracing developed by NVIDIA’s Lightspeed Studios. It’s unlikely that this remaster will surpass Quake II RTX in terms of visuals.
