In the realm of service delivery, Aadhaar-based face authentication transactions are gaining robust momentum. In May, monthly transactions reached an all-time high of 10.6 million since its launch in October 2021, according to the Ministry of Electronics & IT. This marks the second consecutive month to record over 10 million face authentication transactions.

“The number of face authentication transactions is on a steady ascent. The increase of 38 percent in May, compared to January 2023, reflects its growing usage,” stated the ministry.

Aadhaar-based Face Authentication

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has developed an artificial intelligence/machine learning-based face authentication solution which is currently utilized by 47 entities. These entities include state government departments, central government ministries, and select banks.

Among its various applications, the Aadhaar-based face authentication system is used for registering beneficiaries under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, authenticating beneficiaries in the PM Kisan scheme, generating digital life certificates for pensioners, marking staff attendance in government departments, and opening bank accounts with leading banks.

Aadhaar-based Face Authentication in Andhra Pradesh

Among several states, the government of Andhra Pradesh is utilizing Aadhaar-based face authentication for the Jagananna Vidya Deevena Scheme, which provides fee reimbursement to eligible higher education students, and the EBC Nestham scheme, which delivers welfare services to economically backward women.

“Face authentication offers benefits such as ease of use, quicker authentication, and it serves as an additional modality to enhance the success rate of authentication alongside fingerprint and OTP methods. It captures live images for authentication, safeguarding against video replay attacks and static photo authentication attempts by anti-social elements. Face authentication serves as a robust alternative, particularly for senior citizens and those with fingerprint quality issues due to factors like manual work or health conditions,” the ministry noted.

UIDAI Executes 14.86 Million Aadhaar Updates

In May, the UIDAI executed 14.86 million Aadhaar updates in response to resident requests.

The Aadhaar e-KYC service continues to play a pivotal role in the banking and non-banking financial services sectors, providing transparency and an improved customer experience, thereby facilitating ease of doing business. In May alone, over 254 million e-KYC transactions were conducted.

15.2 Billion Aadhaar e-KYC Transactions

As of May 2023, the cumulative number of Aadhaar e-KYC transactions has surpassed 15.2 billion. The increasing adoption of e-KYC significantly reduces the customer acquisition cost for entities such as financial institutions and telecom service providers. Aadhaar, the foundation of India’s digital public infrastructure and a tool for good governance, plays a crucial role in improving residents’ ease of living through various applications, including AePS for last mile banking, e-KYC for identity verification, and Aadhaar-enabled DBT for direct fund transfer.
