Reddit’s largest community encourages members to transition to Discord

The biggest Reddit community that is participating in the Reddit protest is now redirecting its users to other platforms, namely Discord and Substack. If you try to access r/malefashionadvice, a community with over 5 million subscribers, you will be directed to join their Discord and Substack instead. r/malefashionadvice was a popular resource for fashion discussions and guides, and these alternative platforms offer new spaces for these resources. The Discord allows community members to chat and share things like outfit ideas and inspiration, while the Substack hosts various guides. A moderator of the community, who goes by the name Zach, expresses that the Discord experience is much better, and the community is more effectively self-moderated due to a high ratio of existing members to new users. The Substack was primarily created to transfer the subreddit’s guides and maintain their formatting. The most popular guide, “Building a Basic Wardrobe,” has received over 2,000 views, mostly from Discord.

However, both the Discord and Substack are smaller in size compared to the subscriber base of r/malefashionadvice. The Discord has around 2,000 users, while the Substack has almost 560 subscribers. This private status of the subreddit is part of a larger protest against Reddit’s new API pricing, which caused some third-party apps to shut down. At the peak of the protest in June, over 8,000 communities went private, but many have since reopened after Reddit informed moderators that they would be removed if they didn’t resume normal operations.

Reddit seems displeased with r/malefashionadvice’s decision to remain private. The subreddit’s moderators received a message from a Reddit admin stating they would be replaced if they didn’t reopen the community. In response, Zach explained that the moderation team has been active in addressing content and has only kept the community closed for 13 days. The moderation team plans to continue their role until they are removed. Zach believes that if new moderators are installed and the community reopens, many users may return, but most regulars may not due to issues like bot spam and a lack of sufficient moderation tools.

Other communities are also participating in protests in their own ways. For example, r/AccidentalRenaissance, a subreddit dedicated to images resembling Renaissance paintings, is now private after its moderators resigned. They are encouraging users to join alternative Reddit communities on Kbin and Lemmy. Similarly, r/PICS, a subreddit solely focused on posts about comedian John Oliver, is requesting him to join the moderation team. Over 2,000 subreddits are still dark in protest, according to the Reddark tracker.
