Report: Indian film industry earns over 12000 crores in 2023; Bollywood occupies top spot

2023 has been very fruitful for the Indian film industry. Movies like Jawan, Pathaan, Animal, Gadar 2, Jailer, Salaar, and Leo have set the box office on fire with stupendous collections. According to the report published by Ormax Media, the Indian film industry earned more than 12226 crores in the last calendar year. Compared to 2022, the collections went up by 15% in 2023, and this is the best year for the Indian industry.

The highest contribution came from the Hindi film industry, with about 5380 crores. This is the first time in history that the Hindi industry crossed the 5000 crores mark in a year. The majority of critics and trade experts wrote off Bollywood when films were struggling after the pandemic, but the industry has given a sensational comeback with Superstars like Shah Rukh Khan and Ranbir Kapoor taking the lead. The best part is that even medium-budget films have once again begun winning the hearts of audiences.

Tollywood, a.k.a. the Telugu film industry, occupied the second spot with a contribution of nearly 2300 crores. Apart from Prabhas and Chiranjeevi, other top stars didn’t have a single release in 2023. Salaar is the biggest hit from Tollywood in 2023, followed by Waltair Veerayya. In 2024, things are looking bright as almost every Telugu star hero is having a release.

Kollywood’s contribution is 16%, which is about 1960 crores. Out of these, Jailer and Leo contributed more than 1300 crores. The fourth, fifth, and sixth spots are occupied by Hollywood (1139 crores), Mollywood (572 crores), and Sandalwood (312 crores), respectively. While Bollywood witnessed a humongous 53% year-on growth, the Kannada industry’s contribution decreased by 61%.

Though the collections saw an upward trend, footfalls are still below the pre-pandemic level, and there is much room for improvement in this aspect. The most important point to note here is that the rise in collections was due to an increase in ticket prices but not an increase in footfalls. Going further, the focus should be on more quality content.
