Review: Diablo IV – Experience a Thrilling Loot-Fest Amidst the Infernal Abyss

I must confess that I have never played a Diablo game before, which is surprising considering the franchise’s reputation for its ghoulish monsters, perilous dungeons, loot drops, and bloodshed. Despite being late to the party, Diablo IV has managed to catch my attention with its promising features. Blizzard has learned from the mistakes of Diablo Immortal and is making big plans for Diablo IV. The game will have an expressive open world with plenty of room for future content, as well as improvements to combat and the build system. These updates should distract us from Blizzard’s controversies, such as the stolen breast milk scandal and the cancellation of Overwatch 2’s PvE mode.

In Diablo IV, players are immersed in a dark and religiously themed world called the Sanctuary. This realm has been ravaged by the Eternal War between the High Heavens and the Burning Hells, and the human inhabitants are caught in the middle. The once peaceful refuge has fallen into darkness, and a legendary demon, Lilith, Queen of the Succubi, has taken an interest in the power vacuum. As the Wanderer, players start their journey in a snowy cave in the Fractured Peaks. The prologue begins with anguished cries for help, propelling players into a basic RPG storyline that serves as a starting point to explore the game’s lush new world.

One of the highlights of Diablo IV is the character creation screen, where players can choose from five main classes and customize their appearance with hairstyles, body markings, jewelry, eye color, and more. As a first-time player, I chose the Necromancer class, which allows me to summon and command a group of undead corpses. This class proved advantageous as I could stay at a safe distance from tanky minibosses and heal myself when needed. Another class that caught my attention was the Druid, a shapeshifter who can transform into a werewolf or a bear with additional elemental skills. The other classes, Rogue, Sorcerer, and Barbarian, each offer their own unique playstyles, providing a diverse range of gameplay options.

Diablo IV doesn’t hold players’ hands, allowing them to figure out the controls on their own. The left click serves multiple functions, including movement, attacks, and looting, making dungeon crawling less tedious. With its shift towards an open-world format, exploration is a key aspect of Diablo IV. The game is filled with towns, NPCs, quests, shortcuts, world bosses, and enemy encounters, creating a rewarding experience for players who love to uncover secrets. The first act takes players to Kyovashad, a medieval settlement that offers a reprieve from the harsh outer world influenced by Lilith.

While the main storyline in Diablo IV follows the chase after Lilith, the quests within each segment often feel like filler content. Characters’ lack of caution leads them into dangerous situations, which can be frustrating. However, the dialogue is well-written, and the voice acting for Lilith is particularly captivating, showcasing her seductive powers. The character Lorath Nahr, voiced by Ralph Ineson, adds depth to the story with his distinctive accent and intriguing role in the narrative.

Blizzard has nailed the dark aesthetic of Diablo IV, creating a gruesomely ugly world filled with piles of carcasses, severed limbs, pools of blood, and other horrifying visuals. The atmospheric landscape features demonic caves, deadly forests, putrid swamps, and snowy areas that enhance the immersive experience.

Overall, Diablo IV shows promise with its expansive open world, improved gameplay mechanics, and captivating aesthetic. Despite the narrative’s pacing issues and filler content, the game still manages to engage players with its rich lore and challenging gameplay. As a newcomer to the series, I’m excited to dive deeper into the demonic realms of Diablo IV and experience all it has to offer.
