The tragic death of Sushant Singh Rajput continues to be one of the most unresolved mysteries in Bollywood. On June 14, 2020, the actor was discovered dead in his Bandra residence. As part of the investigation, Sushant’s girlfriend, Rhea Chakraborty, and his flatmate, Siddharth Pithani, were arrested and imprisoned. They have since been granted bail. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) recently informed the Supreme Court that it will not challenge Rhea’s bail in the drug-related cases connected to the actor’s death.
Shortly after this update, Rhea Chakraborty took to her Instagram Stories and posted a video with a caption that said ‘Gratitude’ along with a folded hands emoji, reflecting her relief and gratitude for the decision.
During a hearing in the Supreme Court, the Narcotics Control Bureau clarified that it is not challenging Rhea’s bail but wants to keep the question of law open with regard to Section 27-A of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
“We are not challenging the grant of bail but seeking clarification on the interpretation of the section. Please keep it open for consideration. Let the order not be treated as a precedent as well,” said the Additional Solicitor General. The apex court agreed and disposed of the government’s appeal, clarifying that the Bombay High Court order should not be considered as a precedent.
The NCB had charged Rhea Chakraborty under Section 27-A of the NDPS Act, which pertains to “financing and harbouring illegal drug trafficking”. This section carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment and prohibits bail. However, the Bombay High Court ruled that merely paying for a drug transaction does not qualify as financing drug traffic.
For those unaware, Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead in his Mumbai apartment under mysterious circumstances. The initial investigation by the Mumbai police deemed it a suicide, but due to public outrage, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and other agencies were involved in the case.
