Safety Issues Associated with Piracy on E-commerce Platforms

The government has been called upon to intensify its efforts in combating piracy and violations of intellectual property rights, as these actions have serious implications for safety and consumer confidence. One particular area where piracy is causing harm is in the production and labeling of elastomeric (rubber-like) sealants, which are commonly used in construction and home repairs.

A sealant manufacturer in the country has reported that counterfeit elastomeric sealant products continue to flood online markets. The manufacturer has conducted test purchases on popular e-commerce sites and discovered counterfeit sealants that have not undergone quality testing and may pose safety risks.

“We are in the process of gathering evidence to be handed over to the authorities to support our campaign against counterfeit products,” said a statement from Bostik Philippines, an elastomeric sealant manufacturer amidst the surge of counterfeit products.

Elastomeric sealants are critical for home repairs and construction. Poor-quality sealants can be dangerous. “These unscrupulous traders not only tarnish the reputation of the products they sell, but also reflect poorly on the e-commerce platforms that allow their presence if not addressed properly,” the statement added.

The company has been aggressively campaigning against the proliferation of counterfeit elastomeric sealants in recent months, with authorities working to apprehend the manufacturers of these products. The statement emphasized that counterfeit elastomeric sealants jeopardize the safety and integrity of structures.

“Despite carrying our brand name and trademarks, we cannot guarantee the quality of these counterfeit products as they are manufactured outside of our facilities,” the statement cautioned.

Last year, operatives from the National Bureau of Investigation discovered four warehouses in Caloocan City holding millions of pesos worth of counterfeit sealants. The company continues to receive reports of counterfeit sealants being sold in various cities and towns. It urges the public to provide information or send photos of counterfeit Bostik products through their hotline number 7900-5656 or via email at [email protected].
