Samsung’s first XR headset to launch in 2025; says report – Technology News

As the world eagerly awaits for the XR headset, rumours suggest that Samsung’s purported XR headset will be available to developers in October this year. Reportedly,  XR headset may arrive for developers later in 2024. However, the launch of the headset for the public could be delayed till 2025.

Earlier during the Galaxy Unpacked event, the South Korean technology conglomerate had teased its extended reality (XR) platform. TM Roh, President and Head of Mobile experience Business at Samsung Electronics, had mentioned that the XR headset would be “coming this year”.

Samsung to launch its XR headset

The Samsung XR headset was developed in partnership with Google. The South Korean tech giant had announced during the Galaxy Unpacked event that a VR headset is slated to arrive later this year.

However, according to a recent report by Business Insider, only the developer version will be released this year. In addition to this  the consumer launch has been anticipated by March 2025. Also Samsung is tipped to introduce an early version of its XR headset, codenamed “Moohan”.

Other updates expected

The device is expected to feature a micro-OLED display. The XR headset might include eight tracking cameras, and a Time-of-Flight sensor. Additionally, it will support hand and eye tracking. This feature has the potential to make it the first XR headset to incorporate AI features.

There has been speculation that Samsung will be using a Qualcomm chip. According to some sources this should be an upgraded Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip from Qualcomm. The  Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip can be slightly more advanced than what you’ll find in the Meta Quest 3.

Further rumors suggest that the XR headset can run in any form of Android firmware. This is due to the fact that Samsung is working in collaboration with Google for the XR headset. Google is going to be lending a hand on the operating system side of things.

What’s next

Initially, when Google, Samsung, and Qualcomm joined forces in 2023, speculations came that an XR headset would be revealed by the end of the year. However, that didn’t happen for a few reasons. According to a tech analyst @OreXda, the delays could have been primarily a result of the Apple Vision Pro headset being released. As a result the official release date was constantly moved back throughout the year.

Others had suggested that Samsung might have faced construction and supply issues, and its partners focused their attention elsewhere.
