Sanjay Puran Singh’s film, 72 Hoorain, featuring Aamir Bashir and Pavan Malhotra, premiered on July 7 amidst ongoing controversy. Even on Day 3, the film continues to struggle at the box office. The pre-release controversies surrounding the film may be a contributing factor to its underperformance.
On its opening day, 72 Hoorain failed to surpass half a million rupees, only managing to collect Rs 0.35 crore. However, on Day 2, the film showed improvement, collecting Rs 0.45 crore. It had an overall occupancy rate of 11.60% in the Hindi belt. Early estimates suggest that on Day 3, the film only earned Rs 0.47 crore, bringing its total earnings to Rs 1.26 crore.
Directed by Sanjay Puran Singh, 72 Hoorain revolves around the Quranic concept of Hoor and sheds light on the indoctrination of youth in the name of religion, leading them towards terrorism. Prior to its release, a Mumbai-based social activist filed a police complaint against the filmmakers, accusing them of hurting religious sentiments. The complainant also lodged a separate case with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), seeking a ban on the film’s screening.
The film gained attention when the CBFC allegedly refused to release its trailer before the film’s release. In response, Ashoke Pandit, the film’s co-producer, shared a video message on Instagram clarifying that the media reports were misleading. He stated that 72 Hoorain had received an ‘A’ certification on October 10, 2019.
