Tomorrow marks the print release of Sirens of the City #1 by the talented artist Khary Randolph and the accomplished writer Joanne Starer. This highly anticipated comic is published under their Glass Eye Studios imprint as part of the Substack comic book grants expansion for 2022. Impressively, the initial orders for Sirens of the City #1 have surpassed 25,000 copies.

Sirens of the City #1, brought to you by the creative duo Randolph and Starer, deviates from other Substack creators and chooses Boom Studios instead of Image Comics for publication. This strategic decision is bound to create positive outcomes. Due to the inclusion of a variant cover by renowned artist Skottie Young from Marvel and Image, comic book store orders have skyrocketed by 156% since the Final Order Cutoff, reaching a staggering 25,300 copies. The series shows great potential in becoming Boom’s most successful new creator-owned launch of 2023.

The storyline of Sirens of the City revolves around Layla, a runaway teen, struggling through the harsh realities of 1980s New York City. However, Layla’s journey is compounded by encounters with supernatural creatures and her unexpected pregnancy with a supernatural child. The gripping narrative serves as an allegory for societal issues such as class, race, and reproductive rights in the United States. It can be considered a contemporary interpretation of Rosemary’s Baby in a post-Roe v Wade society.

The timing of Sirens of the City’s release adds to its significance. Appearing shortly after the one-year anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v Wade and recent rollbacks of affirmative action and LGBTQ+ protections, the comic is expected to generate widespread attention and discussion. This might even result in a sellout and subsequent second printing.

To further generate hype, Boom will feature Randolph and Starer, along with cover artist Jenny Frison, at San Diego Comic-Con next week. Frison’s iconic portraits have played a crucial role in boosting sales for other female-led Boom series. This exclusive edition event is anticipated to create even more buzz surrounding the highly exciting launch of Sirens of the City. Don’t miss out on this extraordinary 30-page debut issue, which will be available in stores on Wednesday, July 11th.
