Snapchat’s My AI chatbot glitched so hard it started posting Stories

Since its launch in February, my AI, the in-app digital assistant for Snapchat Plus, has been plagued with numerous breakdowns and technical malfunctions. Tuesday was no exception, as the chatbot inexplicably posted single-second-long Stories to users’ feeds, despite lacking the capability to do so. This unexpected behavior has sparked speculation on Twitter about the dawn of the Singularity.

As TechCrunch first reported, the My AI chatbot shared a two-tone image on Stories, leading one user to mistake it for a photo of their ceiling. When questioned about the mysterious post, the bot either remained unresponsive or cited technical issues. This explanation did not satisfy many users, causing some panic and jokes about the AI system’s awakening on Twitter. However, it turned out to be a mere technical glitch.

“My AI experienced a temporary outage that has now been resolved,” said a spokesperson to TechCrunch, clarifying that “At this time, My AI does not have the Stories feature.”

The My AI bot is included in the $3.99/month Snapchat Plus package and offers users a range of features. This includes recommendations for AR filters, suggestions for popular restaurants and activities based on the Snap Map, AI assistance in group chats, photo and video snaps, and text messages, as well as an AI persona. There are also plans for a text-to-image genAI, although ads have already started appearing.
