Sony Announces Expiration of Current CoD Contract with PlayStation After 2023’s Game

According to a court document from the ongoing Microsoft-FTC trial, Sony has confirmed that the last Call of Duty title covered under their contract is slated for release in late 2023. This information was revealed in a letter obtained by The Verge, in which PlayStation boss Jim Ryan stated, “[T]he last game covered by the contract is a Call of Duty title to be released in late 2023.” While this year’s game is rumored to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Activision has yet to make an official announcement.

It’s worth noting that the Call of Duty marketing deal between Sony and Activision, which grants PlayStation users early access to maps, weapons, and exclusive content, began in 2015 with Call of Duty: Black Ops 3. This partnership also involved the use of PlayStation branding in advertisements and special features on PlayStation versions of the game. Prior to this deal, Microsoft had a marketing relationship with Activision, with Xbox being the platform where Call of Duty map packs were released first.

Despite the expiration of the Sony-Activision contract, it is unlikely to affect future Call of Duty releases on PlayStation. Microsoft has reiterated its commitment to bringing Call of Duty to PlayStation in the event of its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. In the event that the acquisition does not go through, it is safe to assume that Activision will continue to support PlayStation.
