Sony Delays Release of More Movies, Including Beyond the Spider-Verse

As the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes continue with no end in sight, the studios are taking action by adjusting their release schedules. Sony Pictures recently announced a series of changes to its upcoming movie releases, including the unveiling of release dates for previously undated films and the postponement of others by weeks or even months (via Deadline).

Starting with the films that were previously undated, Sony announced that they will release Bad Boys 4 on June 14, 2024, bringing back the dynamic duo of Will Smith and Martin Lawrence for another installment in their popular buddy cop series. Additionally, Sony revealed that Venom 3 will hit theaters on July 12, 2024, although this date may change due to the impact of the SAG strike on production.

Unfortunately, for movies that already had release dates, there are significant delays. Here are the revised release dates for Sony’s upcoming films:

  • Gran Turismo was originally scheduled for August 11, but it has been pushed back to August 25. Sony plans to generate excitement for the movie by offering sneak previews on August 11 and August 18, allowing the audience to promote the film in the absence of promotional efforts by the stars.
  • Kraven the Hunter has been delayed from its original October release date and will now premiere on August 30, 2024. Sony decided to wait and capitalize on the promotional efforts of Aaron Taylor-Johnson, rather than release the movie without his involvement.
  • The untitled sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife was initially set for December 20 but will now be released on March 29, 2024. Interestingly, this was the original release date for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which has now been postponed indefinitely.
  • Madame Web, starring Sydney Sweeney, Emma Roberts, and Dakota Johnson, has been moved up from February 16 to February 14.
  • Unfortunately, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is now listed as TBD. The original March 2024 release date was ambitious, and with the actors unable to provide voiceover work, Sony does not have a confirmed date for its release.
  • Did you know that another Karate Kid reboot is in progress? Now you do, but instead of watching it on June 7, 2024, you’ll have to wait until December 13, 2024.
  • Finally, the horror movie They Listen directed by Chris Weitz has been rescheduled from August 30, 2024, to TBD.

Although it has been an exciting week for Hollywood, with successful premieres of Barbie and Oppenheimer receiving both commercial and critical acclaim, the next twelve months will be challenging. Studios are grappling with how to promote their projects without the presence of the actors, who are currently on strike alongside writers, negotiating for a fair agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).

Unless the studios comprising the AMPTP have a surprising change of heart, these delays are likely just the beginning.
