In the past, Spotify attempted to incorporate TV content by including clips from Comedy Central and ESPN, but this endeavor did not gain much traction.
Although adding music videos is not a groundbreaking idea among music streaming services, Spotify’s adoption of this feature would help it compete with Apple Music. Furthermore, it could attract users who would otherwise watch music videos on YouTube. This addition would also enrich Spotify’s new feed and potentially draw musically-inclined viewers from popular social platforms such as Instagram and TikTok.
While music videos themselves do not generate substantial direct revenue, they can complement artists’ income from audio streams and increase exposure. YouTube, for example, gives creators a 55 percent share of ad revenue for an average of $18 per 1,000 views. However, this amount must be split among the artists, labels, and other parties involved.
Spotify is also under pressure to diversify its sources of income. Earlier this year, the company laid off a significant number of employees, including 200 from its podcast team. By incorporating music videos, Spotify could potentially improve its financial situation without requiring a large production team, as is necessary for podcasts.
