Squid Game Reality Competition: Netflix Releases Electrifying Teaser

Netflix revealed a sneak peek of its new reality series, Squid Game: The Competition, during its global Tudum livestream. This highly anticipated series is based on the critically acclaimed South Korean show, Squid Game, which won an Emmy in 2021. Just like the original series, Squid Game: The Competition features 456 contestants competing in various schoolyard games for a chance to win a whopping $4.56 million. With 10 gripping episodes, this intense reality show is set to premiere on Netflix in November.

Although the 27-second clip doesn’t reveal much, it appears that Netflix has stayed true to the original show’s concept. The teaser provides a glimpse of the behind-the-scenes work, showcasing the meticulous set construction that accurately recreates the distinct production design of the series.

The teaser also briefly introduces the overseers in their masks and red onesies, the contestants wearing green jumpsuits, and the barracks where they likely reside. Additionally, it briefly showcases the imposing animatronic doll that oversees a high-stakes game of Red Light Green Light (which, unlike the deadly version in the series, is not life-threatening in the reality show).

Earlier this year, there were reports from Variety and Rolling Stone citing contestants who described the filming of Squid Game: The Competition as “inhumane disaster,” “cruel,” and “rigged.” Medics had to be called on the first day of shooting to treat minor injuries. However, the teaser does not address these allegations.

Squid Game captivated audiences worldwide when it premiered in 2021. IGN praised the first season, awarding it a 9/10 review and describing it as a gripping thriller, drama, and psychological journey with a visually striking aesthetic.
