Starfield Comparison: Character Model Downgrade Evident, But Lighting Enhancements Shine

An early Starfield comparison video has been released, showcasing the improvements made from the 2022 demo to last week’s 2023 demo at the Xbox showcase.

Last week, Xbox and Bethesda treated fans to an extensive deep-dive into the highly anticipated game Starfield, giving a glimpse into its combat, exploration, and diverse world. Building upon the first gameplay trailer released by Microsoft and Bethesda last year, YouTuber ‘Cycu1’ has now unveiled a comparison video between the two gameplay videos. This early comparison clearly highlights the significant enhancements made by Bethesda in terms of lighting, environments, and overall atmosphere since last year. However, it is worth noting a noticeable downgrade in the level of detail for characters, particularly in their facial hair and eyes.

Watch the comparison video below and form your own judgment:

As revealed last week, Starfield will run at 30FPS on both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Xbox head Phil Spencer clarified that this decision was made based on artistic considerations by the development team. However, it remains uncertain whether this choice will also apply to the PC version of the game. In an interview with GiantBomb, Spencer explained, “It’s a creative choice. We obviously have games that are running at 4K/60 on the platform. It’s not a platform issue, it’s a creative decision.”

On the Xbox Series X, the game will be presented in stunning 4K resolution, while the Xbox Series S version will run at 1440p. Interestingly, Digital Foundry from Eurogamer suggested that the game’s native resolution on the Series X is relatively low, at around 1296p, which is then temporarily upscaled to 4K resolution.

PC gamers curious about whether their systems can handle Starfield can find the minimum and recommended PC requirements here.

Starfield is set to launch globally on September 6 for Xbox Series X|S and PC. According to Microsoft and Bethesda, the game will have fewer bugs at launch compared to any previous Bethesda game.

In a recent statement, Xbox’s Matt Booty stated, “We have a significant number of people internally playing Starfield. Working closely with Todd and the team, I have seen bug counts, and if the game were to be released today, Starfield would already have the lowest bug count of any game Bethesda has ever released. Additionally, considering the long-lasting impact of Skyrim and the continuous discoveries made by players even after ten years, there is a potential for Starfield to unlock similar experiences over time.”
