Stephen Amell Dismisses SAG-AFTRA Strike As “Frustrating”

The SAG-AFTRA strike, now entering its third week, has garnered attention as actor Stephen Amell voices his opinion on the matter during a convention appearance, according to a report by Variety. While Amell expresses support for his union, he criticizes striking as a “reductive negotiating tactic” and “myopic.”

During his appearance at Galaxycon in Raleigh, N.C., Amell was asked about the ongoing strike. Prefacing his remarks with support for the union, he states, “I support my union, I do. And I stand with them. I do not support striking. I don’t. I think that it is a reductive negotiating tactic.”

In widely-shared footage on social media, Amell asserts, “I find the entire thing incredibly frustrating, and I think that the thinking as it pertains to shows, like the show I’m on that premiered last night, I think it’s myopic.”

The show Amell refers to is the pro wrestling show Heels, which debuted its second season on Friday night. The appearance at Galaxycon was not specifically marketed as a promotional event for Heels, as the actors’ bios on the convention’s website do not mention their past or current projects. Additionally, a note on the website informs fans that questions cannot be asked during guest panels due to the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Stephen Amell is currently the most high-profile actor opposing the strike, which was unanimously voted for by union members on July 13. Many top names in the entertainment industry have actively participated in picket lines to support the strike, including the entire cast of Oppenheimer, who left their own premiere to join the cause.
