Sudha Murthy reveals Infosys as the true love of NR Narayana Murthy

Sudha Murty and NR Narayana Murthy opened up about the evolution of their relationship, the founding of Infosys, and the sacrifices made for the success of the iconic company. Sudha Murthy, author and philanthropist, emphasised Infosys is her husband’s first love, while NR Narayana Murthy likened the company to their third child.

When questioned about his greatest love, NR Narayana Murthy said, “While I certainly feel that Sudha is my first love, Infosys was very important. It’s almost like the third child.” Sudha Murthy said, “It’s a third child but it’s a heartbeat. A man’s sacrifice, 100% giving up, that is different than loving his wife.”

“I think love and affection should not be defined by how much time you spend in a day; they are not quantifiable, but rather, they are feelings,” Narayana Murthy said.

The conversation took an emotionally charged turn when NR Narayana Murthy candidly admitted one of his regrets, acknowledging that he could have been a better father, stating, “I think I have not been a great father, I could have been much better, a lot better. But thanks to Sudha that particular lacuna was filled up.”

Sudha Murthy traced the evolution of Narayana Murthy through different phases of his life. From a carefree young man with socialist ideals to a serious individual with strong values, Murthy underwent a transformation. She spoke about the challenges faced when she had to work while Murthy was starting Infosys, leaving their daughter Akshata in the care of her parents due to the lack of facilities.

“I knew my parents would take care of her. And it’s hard for any mother — feeding a 90-day-old baby, but the situation demands, that does not mean you don’t love your child less or more,” Sudha explained. Akshata initially believed Sudha’s parents were her parents, a confusion that was resolved as she grew older.

“My daughter, when she was young, used to go and play with everybody. She would tell everyone, ‘The mother has black hair, but my mother has grey hair,’ thinking that my mother was her mother. After some years, she realised she was not her mother but her grandmother. Then, she would tell everyone, ‘Everybody’s mother is at home, my mother goes to the hospital.’ She mistakenly took my sister as her mother. They instilled very good values in her, and it was the hardest job.”

The couple also discussed the founding days of Infosys, highlighting the sacrifices made, with Sudha taking on the responsibility of caring for their children while Murthy poured all his energy into building the company. “Infosys was built on that,” Murthy stated, underscoring the integral role their family played in the early stages of the company.
