Test-Driving The 2023 Toyota Prius Prime

The Prius has long since relinquished its sole grip on the hybrid car scene, with new rivals emerging constantly. Yet the all-new version unleashed this year is the ultimate Prius – solid, efficient, attractive and highly recommended for anyone who isn’t ready to go electric but wants the better mileage a hybrid delivers in a world-renowned badge. The Prius comes in three trims: LE, XLE, and our tester, the Limited. Prices start at a reasonable $33,445 including delivery. Let’s take a look.

Body

The signature “wedge” Prius shape is on display but they’ve dispensed with all the busy detailing older models had and now we have a flatter, slightly wider Prius. The front bumper integrates smoothly into the body, and a lower air intake compliments the mesh grill. PRIUS is engraved in the center of your liftgate. The Prime, my tester, is the longest trim offered at 181.1 inches.

Inside

It’s all mod, clean and comfy, neither posh nor cheap. There is plenty of space up front for driver and passenger, but those in the rear might find it less roomy, especially if they’re tall. Visibility was satisfactory. The seats are sportier than in previous years, and the dash gets a sharp-looking red LED strip. The shifter now moves to the center console. The amount of space for small items was pleasing – you get an under-floor tray in the cargo bay, a cubby on the center console and pockets on the doors.

Engine/motor

The 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine of last year has been replaced by a bigger 160-hp 2.0-liter engine combining with a pair of electric motors to make a healthy 220 horsepower. The gas/electric mode is a little faster on the 0-60 test at about 7 seconds, 11 seconds on electricity alone. The 2023 Prime’s 3.5 kW on-board charger will take you around 4 hours to refill if you’re depleted on high-powered 240 volt equipment, 11 hours on 110 volt (standard) current.

The Drive

It’s all zippy fun, tight steering and braking, and as caffeinated as you please around town. Four driving modes are on deck – Eco, Normal, Sport and Custom – and three powertrain modes: EV, Hybrid and Auto. It is a Prius, and it drives like a Prius. You’ll get there and your mileage is going to be impressive.

Tech

The Prime has a 12.3 inch screen, the largest of all competitors, and an eight-speaker JBL sound system that’s suitably crispy and bass-y. A customizable, 7-inch digital information panel is mounted on the dash above and behind the steering wheel. You’ve got manual controls for drive modes, lights, heat and air conditioning, with all else delivered by your touch screen. It takes some learning. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

Safety

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the Toyota Prius a Top Safety Pick for 2023, and that’s its highest award. They further said the Prius Prime had been rated “acceptable” in crashes previously but was now “good.” Toyota has a Safety Sense 3.0 suite of advanced safety and driver assistance programs arriving as standard including adaptive cruise control with full stop-and-go function, front collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, lane keeping assist and lane centering.

There’s also a unique system in place whereby an emergency stop system will manuever the car to the side of the road and halt it if the driver fails to respond to prompts.

Storage

With seats folded down, there is more than enough room for whatever you might wish to move whether lumber, a set of drums, golf clubs or skiis. That said, the 2023 Prius has less cargo room than the outgoing model, with 20.3 cubic feet available. A power liftgate is an option.

Conclusion: The Prius has seen a drop in sales this year as opposed to 2022 but it’s still one of the best cars of its type on the road, and the 2023’s a fine new beginning.
