Testing Toyota’s GR electric sports car carried out by Akio Toyoda

LE MANS, France — Toyota Motor Corp’s racing division, Gazoo, has unveiled a fully electric sports car that aims to redefine the driving experience of EVs and deliver the same exhilaration as gasoline-powered models.

Akio Toyoda, Chairman of Toyota, personally tested a prototype of the car, which combines the sleek design of a battery-electric vehicle with the dynamic performance of an internal combustion engine.

“Inside the car, you can hear the engine noise and experience a manual transmission with a clutch,” Toyoda revealed during the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race on June 10. “Driving this electric car feels no different from a traditional one, except for the absence of gasoline fumes.”

While the decision to bring the GR electric sports car to the market is yet to be finalized, it could mark the pinnacle of Toyota’s efforts in electrification, similar to Maserati’s GranTurismo Folgore coupe and Porsche’s upcoming production models derived from the Mission X hypercar.

Toyota has been relatively slower in embracing electrification, launching the midsize battery-electric bZ4X SUV in 2021 followed by the Lexus RZ in the following year. However, in 2022, Toyota and Lexus combined produced only 24,000 EVs globally, significantly less than Tesla’s sales of 1.31 million EVs in the same period.

Nonetheless, Toyota has ambitious goals for the future, aiming to sell 3.5 million EVs annually by 2030.
