The 1975 Opt Out of Jakarta and Taipei Concerts Following Controversial Same-Sex Kiss Outcry in Malaysia

Malaysia’s Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil slammed Matty Healy’s conduct late Friday.

Matt Healey, the lead vocal of The 1975, used profanity in his speech criticizing the government’s stance against homosexuality.

British pop rock band The 1975 announced on Sunday that it was canceling its shows in Jakarta and Taipei after the Malaysian government abruptly ended a music festival. This decision came after the band’s lead singer, Matt Healy, openly criticized the country’s anti-gay laws and kissed a male bandmate during their performance.

The 1975 was scheduled to perform at We The Fest, Indonesia’s annual summer music festival, in Jakarta on Sunday night as part of their 2023 Asia tour. However, in a statement posted on We The Fest’s social media platforms, the band announced that the shows in Jakarta and Taipei will no longer take place due to the current circumstances.

Despite Indonesia being the world’s most populous Muslim nation, LGBTQ rights are not prohibited except in the conservative Aceh province.

During his speech, Matt Healy used profanity to criticize the government’s stance against homosexuality, and he also kissed bass player Ross MacDonald. This incident was captured on social media, leading to a backlash in predominantly Muslim Malaysia.

Malaysia’s Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil strongly condemned Matty Healy’s behavior, stating through a Facebook post that homosexuality is considered a crime in the country and is punishable by up to 20 years in prison and caning. This is not the first time that Healy has used his platform to advocate for LGBTQ rights. In 2019, he kissed a male fan during a concert in the United Arab Emirates, where homosexual acts are also outlawed.
