Many believe Lord Rama was the first Kanwariya. He performed jal abhishek of the Shivling of Baba Dham with Ganga water from Bihar’s Sultanganj, as per beliefs.
The sacred month of Sawan commenced on July 4th in India, marking the start of the Kanwar Yatra. Devotees of Lord Shiva embark on a pilgrimage to holy places like Haridwar, Gangotri, Ayodhya, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and others, where they fill a container called Kanwar with water from the holy Ganga River or other sacred rivers. They carry this container on their shoulders and walk barefoot for hundreds of kilometers.
According to scriptures, here are some individuals believed to be among the first Kanwariyas.
Lord Parshuram
Religious experts believe that Lord Parshuram, a devoted follower of Lord Shiva, was the first Kanwariya to embark on the Kanwar Yatra. He anointed Mahadev while passing through Pura, which is present-day Uttar Pradesh. He brought Ganga water from Garh Mukteshwar and performed jalabhishek (ritualistic offering of water) every Monday during the month of Sawan.
Shravan Kumar
Some scholars believe that Shravan Kumar was the first Kanwariya. This young boy carried his blind parents on a pilgrimage and quenched their thirst by filling a pitcher with water. Unfortunately, he was accidentally struck by an arrow shot by King Dashratha of Ayodhya while filling the pitcher at a lake. It is believed that Shravan Kumar took his parents to Haridwar, fulfilling their wish to bathe in the Ganga River. On their way back, he carried the holy water, marking the beginning of the Kanwar Yatra.
Lord Rama
Another belief is that Lord Rama, from the Treta Yuga era, was the first Kanwariya. He performed jal abhishek of the Shivling of Baba Dham by filling his Kanwar with Ganga water from Bihar’s Sultanganj.
Gods
According to religious beliefs, during the Samudra Manthan (ocean churning), a poison emerged which Lord Shiva drank to protect the gods. As he consumed the poison, his throat turned blue, earning him the name Neelkantha. The gods then offered Lord Shiva water from the holy rivers, including the Ganga. It is believed that the Kanwar Yatra originated from this event.
Ravan
Some people also believe that Ravan was the first Kanwariya. When Lord Shiva drank the poison during the Samudra Manthan, Ravan removed the poison from his throat and anointed the Shivling with water from the holy Ganga river.
