Japan is gearing up for the release of an exciting new Pokémon TCG set called “Ruler of the Black Flame,” featuring fan-favorite characters such as Charizard and Finizen.

We are thrilled to bring you more information and card reveals from the highly anticipated next set of the Scarlet & Violet era in Pokémon TCG. The Charizard-themed expansion “Ruler of the Black Flame” will be launched in Japan on July 28th, featuring a total of 108 unique cards, excluding Secret Rare cards. Notably, this expansion introduces the concept of Tera Pokémon with a Tera typing distinct from their standard typings. Notable Tera Pokémon include the Dark-type Tera Charizard ex, Fire-type Tera Eiscue ex, and Electric-type Tera Tyranitar ex. It has been confirmed that “Ruler of the Black Flame” will contribute to the Scarlet & Violet – Obsidian Flames English-language Pokémon TCG set, set to be released in August 2023. It is expected that “Ruler of the Black Flame” will synergize with the Japanese ex Starter Decks and additional cards from other Japanese sets released this year. Today, we will take a closer look at the Finizen line.

In this set, Finizen receives two dedicated cards—one by kadama and another by Kouki Saitou. Its evolution, Palafin, is showcased on a holographic rare card illustrated by Souichirou Gunjima in its Zero Form.

Let’s dive into their Dex entries to learn more about these fascinating new Pokémon. According to Finizen’s Dex entry:

Finizen enjoys socializing with other members of its species using the water ring on its tail. It possesses the ability to sense the emotions of other living beings using ultrasonic waves.

Its distinctive water ring is formed from a mixture of seawater and a sticky fluid secreted by Finizen’s blowhole.

Zero Form Palafin’s Dex entries reveal:

This Pokémon alters its appearance when it hears the calls for help from its allies. Palafin conceals its moment of transformation from prying eyes.

While its physical capabilities remain unchanged compared to Finizen, Palafin taps into its transformative power to protect its endangered allies.

Japanese sets often provide early insights into what the English-language sets may offer, so be sure to stay tuned for updates on our comprehensive coverage. For previews of Scarlet & Violet cards and the latest news on everything related to Pokémon TCG, continue following Bleeding Cool.
