The gamers have spoken: AMD obliterates Intel in CPU sales

Jacob Roach / Digital Trends

AMD’s revolutionary 3D V-Cache processors have quickly become the CPUs of choice, especially among gamers. The impressive sales figures from German retailer Mindfactory speak for themselves, showcasing a significant gap between AMD and Intel. What’s even more remarkable is that AMD’s previous generation platform continues to dominate the sales charts, despite the absence of an upgrade path from the AM4 socket.

Shared by TechEpiphany on Twitter, the latest data reveals that nine out of the top 10 processors sold on Mindfactory are AMD chips. The only Intel CPU to make the list is the Core i5-13600KF, holding the tenth position alongside the Ryzen 5 5600 with just 150 units sold each.

The Ryzen 7 7800X3D is leading the pack with an impressive 550 units sold, closely followed by the Ryzen 7 5800X3D with 480 units sold. While the dominance of the 7800X3D is expected, the fact that it only slightly outpaces its previous-generation counterpart is intriguing.

Although the 5800X3D is an exceptional CPU that offers excellent gaming performance even by current-gen standards, it does come with one drawback – it belongs to a discontinued platform. AMD is now shifting its focus to the AM5 socket, meaning users who opt for the 5800X3D are limited to AM4 motherboards and DDR4 RAM. Upgrading the CPU in the future would require not only swapping the motherboard but possibly other components as well.

Despite the limitations of the 5800X3D, the sales figures indicate that many consumers are not deterred by this factor. A powerful CPU that can keep up with the latest demands for a few years is enough for now. Additionally, the affordable price of the chip, around $320, combined with cheaper motherboards and RAM compared to the 7800X3D, makes it an attractive option for gamers.

Typically, obtaining accurate sales figures for PC hardware can be challenging, as retailers and manufacturers often keep such information confidential. Therefore, these numbers from Mindfactory provide valuable insight into consumer preferences. However, it’s important to note that this data does not represent the complete picture of what gamers are choosing to buy. For a more comprehensive view, one can refer to the latest Steam hardware survey, which shows that Intel still holds about two-thirds of all CPUs sampled by Steam.

Based on this data, it’s evident that a significant group of gamers seeking to build a new PC right now are more inclined to choose AMD over Intel. This can be attributed not only to the impressive 3D V-Cache technology but also to the competitive pricing strategy. The Ryzen 7 7800X3D outperforms Intel’s Core i9-13900K in gaming scenarios and comes at a lower price of around $440, compared to the $570 of the Intel chip. While the lower core count of the AMD part may make it less suitable for productivity tasks, it is a perfect fit for gaming setups, benefiting from the affordability and superior performance of the AMD chip.
