The Hive of Destiny 2 Face Their Downfall While Striving for the Final Shape

Throughout multiple seasons, Destiny 2 has skillfully blurred the line between good and evil in the perpetual battle between the forces of Light and Darkness. Former adversaries have become unexpected allies, with the Cabal now fighting alongside the Guardians, and a new Eliksni house defying the Witness’s plans to shape the universe. While old threats like the Taken, Red Legion remnants, and the Vex still loom, humanity now finds solace in its newfound allies, as revealed in a recent discussion with Destiny 2’s esteemed senior narrative designers.

But what about the Hive? One of Destiny 2’s most indomitable foes, the Hive are currently undergoing a period of significant upheaval. For millions of years, this civilization, devoted to death, has spread its influence across the universe. However, following the defeat of several worm gods, the Taken King Oryx, and the Witch Queen Savathun, the core belief system of the Hive, known as the Sword Logic, has suffered critical blows.

Presently, only Xivu Arath remains standing, and thus far, her anger and grief have been directed towards the Guardians across multiple seasons of Destiny 2. But is there a glimmer of hope that she could become an ally in the fight against the Witness? Or will she ultimately resort to a final clash against the Guardians and the Light, shattering her sword in the process?

Major spoilers for Season of the Deep follow

Bungie has stated that the Hive are currently experiencing a decline, as their adherence to the principles of the Sword Logic has proven futile against the Guardians. “It’s almost like they’re being deprogrammed because their entire belief system is based on a massive lie given to them by the Witness to control them,” elaborated Robert Brookes, senior narrative designer. “Witnessing the collapse of their belief structure is essentially part of the Hive’s downfall.”

Regarding Xivu Arath, the Hive’s god of war, Season of the Deep has shed more light on her character. Within the Ghosts of the Deep dungeon, players gain insight into her through her memory fragments addressed to Oryx. However, Bungie clarifies that her furious outbursts do not solely signify unbridled rage and fury; rather, they reflect her deep passion for war.

“When she screams at you during the activity, expressing her desire to engage in sword-clashing or destroy you, it may appear as overwhelming rage and hatred,” explained Robert Brookes, senior narrative designer. “However, it’s important to note that her hatred is more akin to a love for participating in the rituals of war. To her, violence represents love; it’s her way of expressing appreciation and connection to her combatants and the species that has left a trail of bloodshed throughout the universe for millennia.”

Brookes further revealed that the exposure to Xivu Arath in the dungeon showcases her vulnerability as she begins to question her own identity, an element also present in one of Savathun’s lore tabs when she assumes the guise of Osiris. Even if the Hive were to align themselves with the rest of humanity’s alliance against the universe, possibly under the leadership of a revived Savathun, the species would have to make amends for their long history of genocidal conquest.

“Considering the billions of years of atrocities they’ve committed, it’s difficult to overlook their past,” added Brookes.

Season of the Deep officially ends on August 22, followed by the yet-to-be-revealed Season 22. On that day, Bungie will also unveil new details about the next expansion: The Final Shape, which will bring the Light and Darkness saga of Destiny 2 to a conclusion.
