The In-Store Payment Option for Your T-Mobile Bill Carries Additional Charges

Kris Carlon / Android Authority

TL;DR

  • Starting this week, T-Mobile will charge $5 for in-store bill payments.
  • Customers can avoid this charge by paying online, through the T-Mobile app, or setting up autopay.

Contrary to popular belief, there are individuals who prefer paying their bills in person, with cash. However, T-Mobile customers who opt to pay their bills at a physical store will be met with an unpleasant surprise. Beginning this week, T-Mobile is implementing a $5 “Payment Support Charge” for subscribers who choose to visit a retail establishment to settle their bills.

Although T-Mobile has not officially stated the reason behind this change, it is likely motivated by the need to maximize the time of sales clerks, who could be focusing on other revenue-generating activities such as signing up new customers or selling phones.

First-hand accounts from both customers and staff in a Reddit thread reveal the discontent surrounding this new charge. Instances of customers leaving the store angrily in response to the $5 charge are reported.

Currently, there is no alternative method to avoid the charge and pay the T-Mobile bill in-store. The available options are paying online through T-Mobile.com, using the T-Mobile app, or setting up autopay, all of which will be free. However, cash cannot be used for these payment methods. If cash payment is non-negotiable, customers will need to factor in an additional $5 charge to their monthly bill going forward.
