The Last of Us Trailer: Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey Journey Into the Post-Apocalyptic, Hostile West

The highly-anticipated trailer for the forthcoming TV series adaptation of The Last of Us has been released by HBO Max. The live-action series, based on the popular zombie-survival video game, offers viewers a fresh look at the protagonists Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) as they cautiously navigate the highly-infected west coast. Neil Druckmann, the original game’s writer, is set to direct one episode of the HBO series and collaborates with Craig Mazin, known for his work on “Chernobyl,” as co-writer. The Last of Us TV series will make its debut on January 16, exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar in India.

The trailer for The Last of Us TV series begins with a voiceover, as Joel and Ellie journey towards a golden building in the distance, believed to be the Massachusetts State House where they must deliver Ellie, a teenage girl. Ellie asks Joel, a hardened survivor tasked with smuggling her to the Fireflies, a resistance group fighting against the oppressive military, “If you don’t think there’s hope for the world, why bother going on?” Joel replies, while we see him skillfully navigating past a clicker, “You haven’t seen the world, so you don’t know,” implying that he finds purpose in protecting family. Following the loss of his own daughter during the outbreak in Texas, Joel has become a depressed and distrustful person, viewing Ellie merely as “cargo” for the time being.

In the subsequent segment of The Last of Us TV series trailer, we learn that Ellie’s blood possesses some unique qualities that prevent her from turning into a “monster” even after being bitten. She reveals to Tess, Joel’s partner in crime who accompanies them on their mission, that somewhere out west, scientists are working on a cure. A series of shots then showcase overgrown streets, militants infiltrating settlements, an armored vehicle, and piles of corpses, reminiscent of the visuals from the original video game released in 2013. The introduction of new characters suggests that embarking on a journey westward may have dire consequences, causing Joel to briefly ponder the worst outcomes.

“You have a greater purpose than any of us could have ever imagined,” reassures Marlene, the leader of the rebel Fireflies, instilling in Ellie the notion that the fate of the world rests in her young hands. As the trailer continues with a melancholic rendition of A-Ha’s “Take on Me,” we catch a fleeting glimpse of Ellie’s mother, portrayed by Ashley Johnson. Johnson previously voiced the character in the game, spanning across the original PS3 version, the remastered edition, and the recently-released “remake.” Watch closely, and you may spot Troy Baker, the original voice actor for Joel, appearing as a member of David’s gang, a cannibalistic survivor group.

Following these scenes, The Last of Us TV series trailer presents a montage of various characters coping with the outbreak, including Nick Offerman’s portrayal of the greasy-haired Bill, an unexpected ally who expertly snipes down incoming enemies. After the title card appears, we catch a glimpse of the terrifying Bloater, the fourth and final evolutionary stage resulting from years of exposure to the Cordyceps brain infection.

The Last of Us TV series is set to premiere on January 16, 2023, exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar in India. Viewers in regions with access to HBO/HBO Max can stream the show starting January 15, 2023, at 6pm PT/9pm ET.
