The Rivian R1T’s highly anticipated “Tank Turn” feature faced unexpected delays and was ultimately abandoned for production. During an insightful Instagram Q&A shared on YouTube, Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe explained that the decision to say goodbye to Tank Turn was based on the potential environmental harm it could cause on delicate trails and grassy terrains. Scaringe commented, “Although we initially intended to include this feature, our commitment to our company’s values led us to reevaluate its impact. We realized that Tank Turn could damage trails and contradict our principles.”
Nevertheless, Rivian is not dwelling on the loss of Tank Turn. The company has instead submitted a patent for a unique feature called “Front Dig Mode,” which offers a more refined turning experience by applying forward torque to the front and outer back wheels. While “Front Dig Mode” is a less aggressive version of Tank Turn, Rivian has yet to confirm if it will be implemented in future production models.
Despite this setback, it’s important to note that the Rivian R1T dual-motor variant continues to impress in terms of range, delivering an impressive EPA-approved 352 miles on a single charge. This surpasses the extended-range capabilities of comparable EV pickups such as the Ford F-150 Lightning and GMC Hummer EV.
