The Vanishing Act at the X-Men’s Hellfire Gala: Ms Marvel Investigates the Mysterious Disappearance

Yes, yes, alright, this will be my final post about the Hellfire Gala, I promise. However, there are some additional details that have come up from yesterday’s extensive coverage on Bleeding Cool.

I must admit, this event has become quite perplexing and has left me feeling a bit overwhelmed. It’s like a mixture of X-Men #137 and Miracleman #15. It reminds me of when my youngest daughter would tell stories and always end them with “and then everyone died!” Professor Xavier believes that all mutants in the world are deceased, except for the few who managed to utilize the Resist triangle method mentioned in U.S.Avengers, Avengers No Surrender, and X-Men: Red #11. X-Men #23 may have provided some insight into where all the mutants have gone. While Professor Xavier cannot detect their presence on Earth or Mars, where we believed they were relocated, perhaps he didn’t focus enough on Ryker’s Island as depicted in X-Men #23.

In X-Men #23, we see Nimrod, Feilong, and Doctor Stasis overseeing the construction of an island prison in New York for Orchis, in preparation for the Hellfire Gala. We speculated that they may have intended to imprison the mutant attendees who were apprehended by the Stark Sentinels. They had already disrupted Magik’s teleportation ability, and now they have captured all the mutants, including The Five, for later use. However, it appears that Ms. Marvel will not be among them. I assumed that she lacked the mental training to resist like the others. However, it’s possible that her Inhuman lineage interfered with Xavier’s call to the mutants. Alternatively, someone may have informed her, as she can be seen in the middle left of a panel with a red triangle on her head. Although she doesn’t seem to have participated in the subsequent fight, she is standing on the side of the group that managed to escape, hidden in the shadows.

She also demonstrates her extensive knowledge of superheroes by correctly identifying the Blob. It would have been quite absurd to reintroduce Ms. Marvel only to kill her off immediately. However, this is not the case for artist Declan Shalvey, who suffers a much more fatal fate.
