With the arrival of the rainy season, the markets in Dausa district of Rajasthan are abuzz with a special seasonal vegetable known as ‘Kacharia’ or ‘Kachari’. This vegetable is available for only two months in a year and is a key ingredient used in traditional rural dishes.

Renowned for its ability to cleanse the body and strengthen bones, Kacharia offers both culinary delight and nutritional value. Its brief appearance in the market makes it a sought-after treat, and if you are in Dausa, don’t miss the chance to enjoy this nutritious and delicious vegetable while it’s in season.

Kacharia, or Kachri, grows on its own in the fields during the rainy season, especially with the Kharif crop. The plant features a cylindrical structure, sprawling along the ground or climbing to a height with some support. The vegetable is small, round, and light green and is often found as shrubs in the fields.

The vegetable can be enjoyed in various ways – cooked, roasted, or simply savoured as a fresh dish. The seeds inside it are also delicious and cooked along with the vegetable to enhance its flavour. Its natural growth and diverse preparation methods make it a cherished seasonal treat.

According to Dr Ravindra Kumar, an Ayurvedic expert from Dausa district, Kacharia is a rich source of calcium and vitamins. It is not just a seasonal delight but also a powerhouse of medicinal benefits.

“This vegetable helps strengthen muscles and alleviate common digestive issues such as stomach gas and constipation. It also helps in detoxification of the body, liver, and kidneys by removing accumulated impurities. For the elderly, incorporating Kacharia into their diet can provide significant health benefits, enhancing overall well-being,” Dr Kumar said.

According to vegetable seller Swarup, Kacharia is priced between Rs 40 and Rs 70 per kilogram. This pricing is due to its limited availability, as the vegetable is only found in the market for two months during the rainy season.
