Tim Walz outright slammed right wing commentator Ann Coulter for calling his neurodiverse son, Gus, ‘weird’ in a now-deleted tweet. The 17-year-old was visibly emotional, and broke down in tears, as his father was nominated as the Democratic vice presidential nominee on Wednesday. Gus stood up and began pointing at the Minnesota governor as he spoke on the third night of the DNC, appearing to shout ‘that’s my dad’. He, Walz’s wife Gwen and their daughter hope later joined the Harris VP pick on the stage.
“Hope, Gus and Gwen–you are my entire world, and I love you,” Walz responded from the podium. The Minnesota governor’s son has a non-verbal learning disorder. Reacting to the 17-year-old’s sobbing moment at the DNC, several right wing commentat Ann Coulter said: “Talk about weird…” This was a dig at Harris-Walz campaign’s use of ‘weird’ for Donald Trump and JD Vance.
Walz quickly reacted to Coulter’s tweet. “Talk about why your fiances keep leaving you,” he said on X, platform formerly known as Twitter. He attached a screenshot of a Wikipedia page, showing the commentator has been engaged several times.
While Ann Coulter has deleted her tweet, she continues to face criticism on social media. “Of course MAGA is making fun of a special needs child showing love for his father. There’s no bottom,” one person said on X.
“Hey, @AnnCoulter My granddaughter has autism and is non-verbal. Our family is from Texas and most have been die hard Republicans for most of their lives. Thanks for completely turning them against the Republican Party!” another one added.
