Trailer for The Last of Us Episode 5: Menacing Bloater Terrorizes Kansas City’s Ruins

The trailer for the highly anticipated fifth episode of The Last of Us has been released by HBO. This post-apocalyptic drama, based on the popular PlayStation video game of the same name, offers a glimpse of a terrifying new threat known as the Bloater – a horrifying creature that represents the final stage of infection caused by the Cordyceps fungus. Entitled ‘Endure and Survive’, the upcoming episode is directed by Jeremy Webb (known for his work on The Umbrella Academy) and will be available two days earlier on HBO Max and HBO On Demand in the US, avoiding a clash with the Super Bowl LVII event on February 12. The episode will be available on these platforms starting from February 10 at 9 am ET, while the traditional cable telecast on HBO will follow its regular Sunday schedule. We have reached out to Disney+ Hotstar for confirmation on whether the fifth episode of The Last of Us will also be released early in India.

The trailer for The Last of Us episode 5 picks up where the previous episode left off, with Joel (portrayed by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) navigating the ruins of Kansas City. At the end of the previous episode, Joel and Ellie found themselves at gunpoint, facing a pair of hostiles named Henry (played by Lamar Johnson) and his deaf younger brother Sam (played by Keivonn Montreal Woodard). These characters are on the run from a group known as the hunters, led by the new character Kathleen (played by Melanie Lynskey). Kathleen describes her movement as a revolution, claiming that Kansas City is now free. This departure from the video game provides some depth to the antagonists before the inevitable showdown. While it is not clear why Kathleen is hunting Henry, it is implied that Henry may have had some involvement in her brother’s death.

During a voiceover, Kathleen questions the concept of forgiveness and justice, as our main characters join forces with Sam and Henry to aid them in their fight against the hunters. Just like in the game, the hunters in the HBO series have rebelled against FEDRA’s military rule in their quarantine zone. However, they now face a new threat as the infected creatures continue to infiltrate the city, driven by the chaos and noise of the ongoing gunfights and explosions. In the trailer for The Last of Us episode 5, we see Ellie still in possession of the stolen gun, which she previously used to save Joel’s life during a tense moment. Joel appears to trust her with the weapon now.

The trailer then showcases intense action sequences, including a terrifying encounter with the highly mutated Bloater as it rampages through the fiery streets. Joel instructs Ellie to flee the area, highlighting the danger they face. Additionally, the footage suggests a final confrontation between Kathleen and Henry, with Kathleen ominously stating, “It ends the way it ends.” It is worth noting that HBO has already renewed the show for a second season, which will delve into the events of The Last of Us Part II game. Showrunner Craig Mazin has indicated that the story has the potential for more than one season of television.

New episodes of The Last of Us are available for streaming every Monday on Disney+ Hotstar in India, starting at 8:30 am. Currently, it remains unknown whether episode 5 will be released early in the country, similar to its early release in the US. We will provide an update on this matter as soon as we receive more information from Hotstar.
