Twitter threatens legal action against nonprofit that tracks hate speech: ‘Tried to hurt social platform’

X Corp., the parent company of Twitter, has issued a legal threat to a nonprofit organization that tracks hate speech and misinformation on social media. According to the New York Times, X Corp. accuses the organization of trying to harm Twitter with its research.

The New York Times has reported that X Corp. sent a notice to the Center for Countering Digital Hate, accusing them of making baseless claims intended to harm Twitter and its digital advertising business. X Corp. has threatened to sue the organization.

The report states that X Corp. cited research published by the nonprofit in June, which examined hate speech on Twitter. The research highlighted Twitter’s alleged lack of action against 99% of 100 Twitter Blue accounts reported by the Center for “tweeting hate.”

Twitter has dismissed the research as “false, misleading, or both.” X Corp. claims that the nonprofit used improper methodology and suggests that it is funded by Twitter’s competitors or foreign governments with ulterior motives.

Imran Ahmed, CEO of the Center for Countering Digital Hate, is quoted in the New York Times, stating, “Elon Musk’s actions represent a brazen attempt to silence honest criticism and independent research.” Ahmed believes Musk wants to rebuild his relationship with advertisers and suppress negative stories.

The Center for Countering Digital Hate has stated that it does not accept funding from tech companies, governments, or their affiliates.

This is the third legal notice sent by X Corp. in recent months. In May, X Corp. sent a letter to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, accusing the tech giant of improper data usage. In July, X Corp. sent a letter to Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, accusing them of copying Twitter’s trade secrets.
