Ubisoft CEO Expresses Optimism Over Upcoming Conclusion of Activision Blizzard Deal

The Microsoft/Activision Blizzard merger is on the verge of becoming a reality. Recently, the US Supreme Court, represented by Justice Elena Kagan, rejected a group of gamers’ request for an emergency injunction to halt the deal. This request was highly unlikely to be granted, especially after the Federal Trade Commission’s denial.

While Microsoft is still working on the revised proposal to be submitted to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CEO Sarah Cardell mentioned that the regulator is patiently awaiting it), the merger worth $68.7 billion is expected to be completed in the upcoming weeks, thanks to the extension agreement signed by Activision Blizzard.

It’s intriguing to hear the perspective of a rival publisher regarding this news. During Ubisoft’s Q1 2023-24 investors call, CEO Yves Guillemot expressed his positive outlook on the merger. He stated that it is good news, particularly because it aligns with the increasing significance of owning valuable intellectual properties (IPs) and expanding them into the mobile space, just like Ubisoft is currently doing.

“I think it’s excellent news that the transaction can proceed, as it demonstrates the power of IPs and the direction the industry is heading. This opens up numerous opportunities for companies in the future. It also highlights the value of IPs that can now reach PC, console, and mobile platforms, becoming global brands. And when we say worldwide, we mean everywhere in the world. This presents a truly fantastic opportunity. Microsoft acknowledges the importance of the mobile aspect in the Activision Blizzard deal, aligning with our investments to strengthen our presence in mobile. All these factors will contribute to the growth of the company’s value.”

Guillemot joins the list of big third-party publisher CEOs who have spoken positively about the Microsoft/Activision Blizzard merger. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, previously expressed a similar sentiment shortly after the deal was announced in early 2022.

As for Ubisoft, they are currently working on Rainbow Six Mobile, Tom Clancy’s The Division Resurgence, and Assassin’s Creed Jade. The first two have recently conducted beta tests, while Jade (published by Tencent’s label Level Infinite) is scheduled to have a closed beta from August 3rd to August 11th.

In other Ubisoft news, the executives have assured that the development of Skull and Bones is progressing well before the upcoming beta, set to begin on August 25th. However, the game still does not have a final release date.
