Yay or neigh?
Yesterday, Cygames unveiled a new game called “Umamusume Pretty Derby: Nekketsu Hachamecha Dai Kasha-sai” in Japan’s Nintendo Direct. However, the release plans for the game were not initially clear. Fortunately, the publisher has now confirmed that the game will also be released in North America under the title “Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash.”
While the cute pixel art visuals caught my attention, what really grabbed my interest were the obvious references to the Nekketsu/Kunio-Kun series. The game features four events in the party Grand Prix: Hurtling Hurdles, Blazing Baskets, Dodgeball Demolition, and Gourmet Gauntlet. I must say, alliterations are quite fun! Three of these events bear a resemblance to games in the Kunio-Kun series, with the Blazing Baskets game even featuring three stacked nets, a nod to “Nekketsu Street Basket.”
However, this game is not just a simple copy. It incorporates a lot of new elements, such as turning characters into penguins for some reason and introducing collectibles on the playing field. From what the trailer shows, all events appear to be free-for-all. While the press release doesn’t provide much information, the trailer speaks for itself in terms of showcasing the game’s fun and excitement.
The game promises a “star-studded cast of Umamusume to play as.” Although I am not familiar with Umamusume myself, being a horse girl seems to be a defining characteristic of the characters. Honestly, this is the first time I have come across Umamusume, as I am not a regular TV show watcher. Nevertheless, the trailer has piqued my interest in the game despite my lack of knowledge about the source material.
“Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash” is set to release on PS4, Switch, and PC sometime in 2024.
