USB-C isn’t perfect, but it keeps making my life easier

Robert Triggs from Android Authority recently shared his personal experience with USB-C and how it has simplified his digital life, particularly when it comes to charging. Despite its flaws, USB-C has greatly reduced the need for multiple proprietary cables and made charging more convenient.

Triggs reminisces about the days when phones had different charging ports, such as DC ports, mini-USB, and micro-USB. He highlights the relief he felt when USB-C became the standard, as it meant he only needed one or two cables for all his devices.

Triggs proudly states that all his tech gadgets are now powered by USB-C. He even has multiport chargers with USB Power Delivery for his various devices, including his Pixel phone, Pixel Watch, Nothing Ear 2, Pixel Buds Pro, Pixel Tablet, iPad Air 4, Kindle Scribe and Paperwhite, and his aging Pixelbook. He appreciates the simplicity of being able to use the same charger and cables for all his devices.

Even his more niche gadgets, like the Insta360 X3 and AirFly Pro Bluetooth transmitter/receiver, charge over USB-C. His portable batteries also use USB-C input. Triggs declares that all he needs are some good USB-C cables to charge everything. He emphasizes the convenience of being able to use any charger at home or in his backpack for all his gadgets, even when he’s on the go. He no longer has to worry about carrying multiple cable types and can easily charge his devices with a pouch containing a wall charger and USB-C cables.

Triggs goes on to mention that he even bought a small USB-C charging puck for his Pixel Watch and Apple Watch, eliminating the need for a separate long cable. He credits the manufacturers’ agreement on a single charging port for enabling this versatile setup.

Triggs explains how USB-C has extended beyond his phones and tablets and into other homebound electronics. He started by purchasing a Baseus USB-C desk lamp and gradually expanded to other items like his Xiaomi mini vacuum, Bob & Brad Q2 massage gun, and white-label lint shaver. These devices can all be charged with any USB-C cable, eliminating the need to search for specific chargers. He emphasizes the joy of having a less cluttered TV cabinet.

USB-C has even made its way into some of Triggs’ smart home products, like the Sensibo Elements air monitor and Google Chromecast. Instead of using separate plugs, he invested in a power strip with built-in USB-C ports. This allows him to connect the Elements and Chromecast with USB-C cables, further reducing clutter.

Triggs admits that there are still some outliers in his setup that use non-USB-C charging ports. For example, his iPhone 12 Pro Max and his iMac’s Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad still rely on Apple’s Lightning port, and his mirrorless Olympus camera requires a standalone battery charger. However, he is hopeful for the future, as the iPhone 15 is rumored to switch to USB-C. Additionally, when it comes time to upgrade these non-USB-C devices, he will prioritize USB-C compatibility.

Triggs concludes by acknowledging that USB-C is not a perfect universal standard, especially for data transmission, audio, and video. However, when it comes to charging, it has significantly simplified his digital and electronic life.
