Vampire Survivors emerged as the ultimate victors at the BAFTA Games Awards in a remarkable turn of events. The indie game not only scooped up the Best Game Design award but also secured the prestigious Best Game prize, surpassing God of War Ragnarök, which had garnered six nominations. Even the developer, Poncle, expressed their surprise and disbelief at winning during their on-stage acceptance speech. The entire ceremony was live-streamed on Twitch in the early hours of Friday and witnessed God of War Ragnarök dominating the nominations with a groundbreaking total of 14, although six of them were in the acting categories for its exceptional cast. It is worth noting that the EE Game of the Year award, which is determined by public voting and is not officially part of the BAFTA awards, was won by the sequel developed by Santa Monica Studio.
Vampire Survivors, which had a successful early access debut on PC in December 2021, quickly captivated players with its pixelated dungeons and the exhilarating task of annihilating waves of nocturnal creatures. In their quest, players can collect various power-ups like bibles and garlic to repel these adversaries. Ironically, despite the game’s title and key artwork referencing vampires, none of the playable characters or enemies actually fit this description.
Christopher Judge continued his winning streak from The Game Awards 2022 by securing another victory for Best Performer at the BAFTA Games Awards 2023 for his portrayal of Kratos in God of War Ragnarök. Additionally, Laya Deleon Hayes, who portrayed Angrboda the Jötunn, won the award for Best Performer in a Supporting Role.
In an unexpected turn of events, God of War Ragnarök also claimed the Audio Achievement award, triumphing over Metal: Hellsinger, a rhythm-based first-person shooter that combines rock music with the satisfaction of annihilating demonic foes. Elden Ring, a critically acclaimed game, emerged triumphant in two categories – Original Property and Multiplayer, surpassing formidable opponents such as FIFA 23 and Splatoon 3. Previously, this title developed by FromSoftware had also secured the Game of the Year accolade at The Game Awards 2022 and the DICE Awards last month.
