Veteran Himachal BJP leader stands by Manish Sisodia: ‘AAP leaders not corrupt’

While the BJP continues to target the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) over the Delhi liquor policy case, former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and senior BJP leader Shanta Kumar has expressed sympathy for AAP leader and former Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, who was granted bail after spending 17 months in jail.

“The readers will be stunned and many of my friends will be annoyed, but I want to say openly that I am sympathetic to Manish Sisodia who has been released on bail by the Supreme Court after 17 months. I am thrilled after his release,” Shanta Kumar said in a press release.

The former Chief Minister said he believes that “the AAP leaders in Delhi are not personally corrupt”.

His statement notes that the AAP originated after Anna Hazare launched an agitation against corruption and the party won 67 out of 70 seats in the first election and “formed the government with honesty” and it also paved the way for a repeat of the government in New Delhi.

“Repeating the government under the nose of the BJP-led union government proved that the party won voter’s trust in New Delhi by doing good work,” Shanta Kumar said.

The BJP leader further said that it was an irony that the elections in India were being fought with black money.

“Every party collects party funds. AAP did the same to expand its base nationwide. However, they lacked the experience to collect funds for the elections. Other parties collect funds in a way that they escape the law. AAP was caught while collecting black money as it lacked experience,” he added.

“I am not supporting that they (AAP) should have indulged in corruption like this. Each leader of every party should seriously think about the way why Indian democracy was being advanced with black money and falsehood. All parties contest elections using black money and each leader who wins the election lies about the expenses incurred in the elections before the election commission of India,” the former Himachal Chief Minister remarked.

The 89-year-old leader said that democracy which begins with black money and falsehood cannot ensure the welfare of the common man. He said that despite figuring amongst the five richest nations, India was home to numerous poor and hungry people.
