Video: BSF officer tries to pacify desperate Bangladeshis trying to enter India

As thousands of Bangladeshis camped along the India-Bangladesh border hoping to cross over to India, the Border Security Force (BSF) has been on high alert. The BSF has even detained multiple Bangladeshis in the past few days as they infiltrated the Indian side amid the continuing violence in the neighbouring country.

Amid this, a video of a BSF officer pacifying a massive crowd trying to enter India has gone viral.

The video, purportedly shot from the Lalmonirhat district on the Bangladesh side bordering West Bengal’s Cooch Behar, shows hundreds of Bangladeshis standing chest-deep in water in a wetland, asking the BSF to allow them to cross over, while the officer tries to explain in Bengali that they cannot be allowed.

In the video shared by Bangladesh’s Tista TV News, the officer can be seen saying through a loudspeaker, “We know that you are facing this problem. Everyone understands the problem. You have come here, but this is a matter of discussion. The problem cannot be solved like this”.

“We cannot take you inside as per our wish, and if you make noise like this, you will not be able to understand what we are saying. Our senior officers have also come here, and on their behalf, I want to tell you that this problem cannot be solved in one day. Our senior officers have talked to your officers, and a message has come from their side, that is, from your officers, that they are trying to solve this problem. So, you are requested to go back today,” the officer appealed to the crowd.

However, the video shows the crowd continuing to stay there, hoping for a chance to enter India.

Thousands of Bangladeshi citizens have been trying to infiltrate into India as violent protesters continue to rule the streets since Sheikh Hasina resigned as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh on August 5, amid the massive anti-government agitation. Many Bangladeshi Hindus have also become targets of the violence.

Though an interim government took charge in Bangladesh under the leadership of Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, the situation remains volatile in many areas. However, Yunus announced that his priority will be bringing normalcy and peace to the country of 17.12 crore people.
