VW’s Electrify America Network Expands with Addition of Tesla Chargers

Electrify America is set to integrate Tesla Inc’s connectors into its extensive network of electric-vehicle charging stations throughout North America, aligning with the industry’s adoption of Tesla’s plug design.

The charging company, mainly owned by Volkswagen Group, has announced plans to offer Tesla’s North American Charging Standard connectors across the United States and Canada by 2025. Electrify America will also continue to support the competing standard, Combined Charging System, as stated in a recent press release.

This decision holds significant weight as Electrify America stands as Tesla’s closest competitor in terms of charging solutions. Last year, Electrify America managed 3,473 ultra-fast connectors in the United States, trailing closely behind Tesla’s count of 13,878, according to BloombergNEF. Meanwhile, EVgo Inc. lagged behind with just 926 connectors.

In joining other major players in the EV market, Electrify America now follows suit in adopting the Tesla charging standard. Charging networks such as ChargePoint Holdings Inc., Blink Charging Co., EVgo, and Wallbox NV have also embraced the North American Charging Standard. Additionally, Volkswagen has revealed that it is currently exploring the implementation of Tesla’s technology, according to a statement released on Thursday.
