Watch | 2 Dead, 300 Injured in Massive Gas Explosion in Kenya’s Nairobi; Toll Expected To Rise

A massive gas explosion rocked Nairobi, Kenya, media reports said on Friday, claiming at least two people and 300 got injured. The blast took place at a gas plant in south-east Nairobi.

“The concerted actions of various response units have resulted in the successful evacuation of 271 individuals to different health facilities in Nairobi,” the Kenya Red Cross said Friday, adding that an additional 27 people were treated on site.

One of the videos going viral online shows a massive fire close to blocks of flats in the Embakasi region. Several gas cylinders were being refilled when the fire broke out just before midnight on Thursday, BBC reported. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Shortly after the fire started, firefighters and emergency services arrived at the scene where Kentainers Company Ltd is based, according to government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura.

“The building hosting the company is badly damaged,” he told the British broadcaster. “Members of the public are advised to avoid the area as rescue operations are underway including fire engines being deployed to the area,” he added. Local authorities anticipate the death toll to rise.

Witnesses reported feeling tremors right after the explosion. The fire is said to have extended across multiple apartment complexes, sparking concerns over a potential increase in casualties.
