NASA astronauts Jasmin Moghbeli and Loral O’Hara accidentally dropped a tool bag during a spacewalk. The astronauts spent six hours and 42 minutes outside the International Space Station (ISS) and carried out maintenance work.

The incident took place on November 1 when Moghbeli and O’Hara completed their task of working on the station’s solar arrays. Fortunately, for the remaining of the repair work, the tools lost were not required.

Tweet by NASA:

“Mission Control analyzed the bag’s trajectory and determined that risk of recontacting the station is low and that the onboard crew and space station are safe with no action required,” NASA said on its official blog.

Here is the video of the incident:

However, the tool bag dropped accidently and it is floating in the space. The bag is reportedly now orbiting around the Earth. The incident was captured on camera by the astronauts’ Japanese colleague Satoshi Furukawa. He was taking a shot of Mount Fuji when he accidentally captured the bag, reported Sky News.

As per EarthSky, a website tracking cosmic events, some people could even see the bag with just a pair of binoculars. In September this year, the European Space Agency estimated that over 35,000 objects were being tracked that are currently orbiting the Earth. The total mass of these objects is around 11,000 tonnes.

A similar incident also took place in November 2008, when Heide Stefanyshyn-Piper lost a tool bag when she was performing a similar task. Meanwhile, in 2006, spacewalker Piers Sellers lost his spatula.
