What Happened To Google’s Offshore Showrooms

Regrettably, the Google Barge did not survive for long. Merely a year after their grand unveiling, the city of Portland made a startling announcement that their version of the new center had been sold and divided – the overall structure and its individual containers. The Press Herald reported that while the structure was acquired by an “international barging company,” the containers were dismantled and sold for parts.

What was peculiar about these barges was that they were never actually put into use. As stated in The Wall Street Journal, none of the four constructed barges were able to open officially due to potential safety hazards concerning their structure. The United States Coast Guard conducted a safety inquiry into the structures and discovered an unusual distribution of fuel across them.

The Coast Guard expressed their concern, stating, “These vessels will have over 5,000 gallons of fuel on the main deck and a significant amount of combustible material on board.”

In simpler terms, the Coast Guard feared that even a minor malfunction could result in a colossal fire. The details of the exchanges between the Coast Guard and Google remain largely unknown, but there were reportedly attempts made to come to a compromise on the structure’s design, according to Consumerist. Despite efforts, the project proved unfeasible, forcing Google to cancel it just one year after its enigmatic revelation. Furthermore, even if the structure had been deemed safe, it seemed too exclusive of an idea to effectively market. At least we now have Google Stores to enjoy.
